Updates to Prime Fishing Times
October 15th, 2006I’ve added the ability to show the tides for additional dates to my Prime Fishing Times website. At the bottom of the page you can choose a new date to display, and after clicking the Show Tides button the new day’s tides appear at the bottom of the page.
I’ve also added a webservice that allows others to display tide data on their own websites.
Ready for Prime Time
October 5th, 2006Prime Fishing Times is ready for “prime” time. You can view tide predictions from nearly 4,000 different locations around the US. I’ve got the map working plus you can select your location from a list of locations. If you have cookies enabled in your browser, the site will remember the last location you chose and use it as your home page the next time you visit. Oh well, now it’s time to market it and see how it does.
Prime Fishing Times is UP!
September 30th, 2006My new Prime Fishing Times website is finally up. It took less than a day to create the site, and an entire week to get in on the web. I started the week trying to host my site with High Speed Rails, but my lack of knowledge with FreeBSD and their less than par customer support resulted in me switching to TextDrive. Let me just say that TextDrive’s support was excellent. And their online knowledge base had enough information in it to allow me to do everything I needed.
So go check it out and tell me what you think. Deven thinks the map is a little hard to use. I agree. I’ll be working to improve that. There are also over 3,000 locations in the database. Right now I’ve limited the map to only showing around 200 sites around the Texas gulf coast. I hope to be able to add the rest of the US sites soon.
Prime Fishing Times in the Works
September 23rd, 2006Well, I went ahead and purchased the PrimeFishingTimes.com domain name today. Deven starting grad school this semester has left me with plenty of time to learn Ruby on Rails programming in my spare time. I’ve been itching to get a website built using it.
If you read this blog at all, then you know I love fishing. As a fisherman I’m a little frustrated with the lack of decent solunar and/or tide sites out there. So I decided to make my own with the features and options I want in the hopes that others would find it useful. I spent around 5 hours this morning programming a very simple tide site that uses the XTide program’s command line interface to display tide data for several thousand locations world wide. I hope to incorporate lots of cool features and options into the site as I have the time. Probably the first thing I’m going to do is use the Google Maps API to allow you to pick a site from a map. I actually have some prototype code working for this, but it needs work.
All I have left to do for now is to pick a rails hosting provider. Hopefully that will happen sometime this week and by next weekend if all goes well I’ll have the site up.
The Action Continues . . .
September 16th, 2006Dear Darling,
Thanks for letting me go fishing this morning. I caught the 26 pound Bull Red on the fishing pole you got me for my birthday this year. It is now officially broken in. The Jack fish was 20 pounds and took much longer to reel in.
Love,
JB
Catch of the Day
September 15th, 2006Dear Boss,
Thanks for letting me leave early today to go fishing. It took around 35 minutes to land this 35 pound Southern Stingray. He was caught with a live finger mullet on Galveston Island near beach access point 10.
See you Monday,
JB
Photo Gallery
July 14th, 2006I finally got around to adding a photo gallery.
Temporary Lull?
June 7th, 2006Work over the last week and a half has been hell. We migrated a major IT system starting over the holiday weekend. Things didn’t go exactly as planned. I got to work around 6:10 AM on Tuesday morning and didn’t leave until around 11:30 AM on Wednesday. I got home and managed to get around an hour and a half of sleep before they called me because of some other problems. I was finally able to get back to bed Wednesday night around 9:00 PM. So in 40 hours I managed to get about an hour and a half sleep. It was brutal.
Well, the migration is finally over. The transition issues are finally starting to dwindle. And I’m finally able to stop and breathe a little. Yee-Hah! I need a vacation . . .
Thanks Girls for the Wonderful Vacation!
May 23rd, 2006
Vacation last week was totally awesome. The girls, Deven, and I all had a wonderful time. Of course I’m missing my girls. I can’t believe how fast Lindsay is growing up. And Blair . . . what a fine young lady she has turned out to be. She is off to college next fall and I know she is going to do great.
Heading to Florida
May 15th, 2006Well, this is it. This is the big week. My oldest daughter graduates from high school on Wednesday. Deven and I are flying out there tomorrow so I can attend her graduation. Then on Thursday we’re taking both girls to Disney for the rest of the week. I’m too excited to sleep.
